Vaccines still effective against Omicron, severity of disease not surged: WHO chief scientist

Vaccines appear to be effective against the Omicron variant because even though the numbers are going up exponentially in many countries, the severity of the disease has not surged to a new level, WHO Chief Scientist Dr. Soumya Swaminathan has said. Swaminathan also emphasised that the Omicron variant is infecting both vaccinated and unvaccinated people worldwide.

Omicron variant LIVE Updates: Karnataka reports 5 new cases

Omicron variant LIVE Updates: Karnataka has reported five new cases of Omicron variant, said State Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar on Wednesday. Of these five new cases, one had travelled from the United States of America, another from the United States of America via Qatar, one returned from Dubai, one arrived from Ghana via Doha and one came from Mumbai. Of the five, four are male patients and one is female. The Health Minister informed that those who tested positive for Omicron include a 22-year-old woman from Davanagere, who had travelled from the USA, a 24-year-old man from Bengaluru, who came from USA via Qatar, a 53-year-old man from Tamil Nadu who arrived at KIAL from Dubai and a 61-year-old man from Bengaluru, travelled from Ghana via Doha. "All positive persons have been isolated and primary and secondary contacts have been identified and tested," Dr K Sudhakar said in a tweet. Karnataka on Wednesday reported 566 fresh COVID-19 cases, 245 recoveries, and six deaths. With the addition of new cases, the cumulative case tally in the state mounted to 30,05,798, of which 7,771 are active cases. The death toll is 38,324.

In Uttarakhand, PM Modi to lay foundation stone of 23 projects worth over Rs 17,500 cr today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Haldwani in Uttarakhand today to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of 23 projects worth over Rs 17,500 crore, the PMO said. The foundation stone will be laid for 17 projects worth over Rs 14,100 crore, and they cover sectors ranging from cross irrigation, road, housing, health infrastructure, industry, sanitation to drinking water supply among others.

Over 40% jump in India's daily Covid cases in last 24 hours; 9,195 test +ve, 7,000 recoveries

COVID-19 India Live News Updates: India recorded 9,195 new cases of the novel coronavirus, along with 302 deaths due to the infection in the past 24 hours. According to the data shared by the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday, the country saw a total of 7,347 discharges in the last 24 hours, taking the total recovery rate at around 98.40 per cent which is the highest since March 2020 and total recoveries data reached to 3,42,51,292.
