Terrorist killed in encounter with security forces in J&K's Pulwama, operation still on

An unidentified terrorist was killed in an encounter with security forces in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, police said. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Rajpora area of Pulwama district late on Tuesday night, a police spokesman said. He said the search operation turned into an encounter after terrorists fired upon the forces, who retaliated.

Omicron Variant Live Updates: Algeria confirms first case of new COVID-19 variant

Omicron Variant Latest News Updates: Algerian health authorities on Tuesday confirmed the detection of the first case of the Omicron COVID-19 variant, local media reported. A foreign national who entered Algeria on December 10 tested positive on his arrival at the International Airport of Algiers. His sample, which was sent to the Institut Pasteur d'Alger, was confirmed on Tuesday as the Omicron variant of the COVID-19, the official APS news agency reported. Fawzi Derrar, acting director of the Institut Pasteur d'Alger, told reporters that the foreign national was put under quarantine upon his arrival in Algeria. According to the WHO, the Omicron variant, which was first detected in Southern Africa, has been detected in at least 65 countries around the world.

Indian scientists to dig deep ice to know past climate at Antarctica

Indian scientists from the 41st expedition to Antarctica have embarked upon a multi-year study of the movement of deep ice sheets near the coast to understand the past climate, which in turn, will help understand how it will change in decades to come. It is for the first time that Indian scientists would drill up to 500 metres and pull out ice cores (cylindrical ice bars) that are repositories of information of the past climate events for long years duration.
