India records 17,921 new COVID cases, 133 deaths

India's COVID-19 tally rose to 1,12,62,707 with 17,921 fresh cases being reported in a day, while the recoveries surpassed 1.09 crore, the Union Health Ministry said on Wednesday. The death toll increased to 1,58,063 with 133 new fatalities, according to the ministry data updated at 8 am. The number of active cases reduced to 1,84,598 which now comprises 1.64 per cent of the infection count.

Yogi govt to purchase wheat directly from farmers

The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh will purchase wheat directly from farmers from April 1 to June 15 under the Minimum Support Price Scheme. The move is aimed at placating farmers who are agitating against farm laws and also to ensure that they get MSP for their produce.

Uttarakhand government formation LIVE: BJP legislature party meet to begin shortly to pick new CM

A meeting of Uttarakhand BJP's legislature party will begin shortly at the state party headquarters here to decide the successor of Trivendra Singh Rawat who resigned as chief minister on Tuesday. The meeting will take place at the party office on Balbir Road. Central observer Raman Singh and state party incharge Dushyant Gautam have also arrived here to oversee the appointment of the new chief minister.  About half a dozen names have been doing the rounds as probables for the chief minister's post including Haridwar MP Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank', Nainital MP Ajay Bhatt, state Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj, Rajya Sabha MP Anil Baluni and state minister of Higher education Dhan Singh Rawat. Six out of a total of seven MPs (five Lok Sabha and two Rajya Sabha) except Baluni have already arrived in the city. Trivendra Singh Rawat resigned on Tuesday after days of speculation about a leadership change in the state.

Gujarat: Minor girl killed in leopard attack in Amreli

A three-year-old girl was mauled to death by a leopard at a village in Gujarat's Amreli district, a forest official said on Wednesday. The incident took place around 9.30 pm on Tuesday in Hemal village under Jafrabad taluka when the girl and some other children were playing outside their houses.

'Silent Killer': Third scorpene-class submarine INS Karanj commissioned into Indian Navy

The scorpene-class submarine INS Karanj commissioned into the Indian Navy in Mumbai on Wednesday, in the presence of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh and Admiral (Retired) VS Shekhawat. This is the third in the series of six submarines built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders. Two submarines of the project namely INS Kalvari and Khanderi have been commissioned in December 2017 and September 2019 respectively. Scorpene is the conventional submarine designed by the Naval Group for the export market.

Report of Kolkata building fire to be submitted within 3 weeks, says Railway official
