Kolkata fire: Doctors mull DNA test to identify bodies burnt beyond recognition
The bodies of some of the nine killed in the fire at a multi-storeyed building in Kolkata's Strand Road area was so badly burnt that they could not be identified, following which doctors were mulling DNA test to ascertain their identity, officials said on Tuesday. The toll in the fire at the New Koilaghat Building rose to nine as two more bodies were found from an elevator in the early hours, they said.

Enforcement Directorate raids Punjab MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira in money-laundering case
The ED raided the premises of Punjab MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira and a few others on Tuesday in connection with a money-laundering case linked to narcotics trafficking and the creation of an alleged fake passport, officials said. They said the searches are being carried out at Khaira's residence in Chandigarh, five other locations in Haryana and Punjab and two places in Delhi.

1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict dies
Noor Mohammad Khan, a 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts convict, has died at his residence in Mumbai after a prolonged illness, a police official said. Khan, a close aide of the blasts conspiracy mastermind Tiger Memon, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the special TADA court in the case on November 24, 2006.

India records 15,388 new COVID cases, 77 more fatalities
With 15,388 fresh cases, India's COVID-19 tally has climbed to 1,12,44,786, while the number of recoveries has surged to 1,08,99,394, the Union health ministry said on Tuesday. The death toll due to the viral disease has gone up to 1,57,930 in the country with 77 more fatalities, the ministry's data updated at 8 am showed.

Thane: 16 COVID-19 hotspots under lockdown from today amid steep rise in cases
Amid the rise in COVID-19 cases, Thane Municipal Corporation on Tuesday imposed a lockdown at 16 hotspot areas from today till March 31. Activities will be allowed in areas outside hotspots as per relaxation given under Mission Begin Again by the Maharashtra government. Earlier, a lockdown between March 13 and 31 was declared in 11 hotspots in Thane city by the civic administration. The order, issued by Thane Municipal Commissioner Vipin Sharma, said the decision was taken due to the rise in COVID-19 cases in these areas in the past few days.

Goyal orders probe into Eastern Railway office building fire in Kolkata
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has set up a high-level committee to ascertain the cause of the fire at an Eastern Railway office building in Kolkata in which nine people were killed on Monday. The fire, which broke out on the 13th floor of the sprawling New Koilaghat building on Strand Road at around 6.10 pm on Monday, is now under control and the cooling process is on, officials said.
