Protesting farmers hold 'Sadbhavna Diwas'; to observe day-long fast today; security enhanced

Farmers protesting the Centre's new agri laws will observe 'Sadbhavna Diwas' on Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary on January 30 and hold a day-long fast, farm leaders said on Friday and asserted that their agitation will gain strength as farmers in large numbers will join them in the days ahead. Addressing a press conference at Delhi's Singhu border, the leaders slammed the ruling BJP at the Centre and accused it of trying to "destroy" the "peaceful" agitation against the agri laws.

Karnataka private schools cannot charge more than 70 pc fees: Minister

Karnataka Education Minister S. Suresh Kumar said on Friday that parents can pay only 70 per cent of the tuition fees fixed by the private schools and the schools should not charge development fees or library fees this academic year. The decision comes after protests by parents' associations who have been opposing private schools sticking to their fee structure even during the pandemic year, where schools conducted only online classes and a section of parents have incurred financial losses.

Police recover envelope addressed to Israeli Embassy from blast site: Sources

An envelope addressed to the Israeli Embassy and containing a note was found at the site of a minor IED blast near the mission in Delhi on Friday, sources said. They said the envelope was addressed to embassy officials but did not divulge any further details including the content of the note. "The envelope has been recovered from the blast site," a source said.

Singhu border violence: 44, including man who attacked SHO with sword, arrested

Police fired tear gas and resorted to baton charge on Friday to break up a clash between farmers and a large group of men claiming to be local residents who hurled stones at each other at the Singhu border, one of the main protest sites against farm laws. The Delhi Police said 44 people including a man who attacked SHO (Alipur) Pradeep Paliwal with a sword have been arrested on charges of attempt to murder and obstructing public servant, among others. The man who attacked Paliwal has been identified as Ranjeet Singh, 22, from Punjab, an official said.
