India records 15,968 new COVID cases, 202 deaths; tally at 10,495,147

India on Wednesday repoted as many as 15,968 fresh Covid cases and 202 deaths, taking the total tally near 1.05 crore, according to health ministry data. The total COVID-19 tally stood at 10,495,147.

Delhi shivers under biting cold wave, dense fog; air quality dips to 'very poor'

Delhi on Wednesday recorded 4.6 degrees Celsius and 3.2 degrees Celsius respectively at Palam and Safdarjung, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Dense fog enveloped the city, resulting in very low visibility in several areas. Owing to this, the Delhi Airport initiated low visibility procedures. In a tweet, the Delhi Airport tweeted, "Low visibility procedures are in progress at Delhi Airport. All flight operations are currently normal. For further assistance, please get in touch with the airline concerned. Any inconvenience is deeply regretted."

Maharashtra minister Dhananjay Munde accused of rape; he says attempt to blackmail

A woman has accused Maharashtra Social Justice Minister Dhananjay Munde of rape and claimed the Mumbai police ignored her complaint. The NCP leader denied the allegations, claiming he is being blackmailed by the complainant and her sister. UK High Court refuses to release Vijay Mallya's funds over failure to present necessary information

Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya has been denied access by a UK court to a significant chunk of his cash held by the UK court funds office as part of the wider bankruptcy proceedings against him launched by a consortium of Indian banks. A judge at the Insolvency and Companies Court at the High Court in London refused to release the funds, saying that Mallya had failed to provide the necessary information to permit the release of the funds.

Air India carries first consignment of Bharat Biotech's Covaxin from Hyderabad to Delhi

The first consignment of Covaxin developed by Bharat Biotech was carried from Hyderabad to Delhi via a flight on Wednesday. According to the officials, "The first consignment of vaccine from Bharat Biotech is being carried by Air India on AI 559 from Hyderabad to Delhi on Wednesday at 0640 hours." Covishield and Covaxin, the two COVID-19 vaccines which have received Emergency Use Authorisation (EAU) have been tested on thousands of people and side-effects are negligible, Dr VK Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog, said on Tuesday and noted that the two "are safest of the vaccines".

Karnataka cabinet expansion today; nearly 8 ministers to take oath

The much-awaited Karnataka Cabinet expansion would take place on Wednesday with the induction of 7-8 ministers, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said on Tuesday. The BJP veteran also indicated one minister might be dropped in the rejig, the third of the 17-month old ministry. "....new Ministers will take oath at the Raj Bhavan at around 3:30 pm tomorrow, the list of seven or eight ministers who will be inducted will be released in due course," he told reporters.
