Heavy rains lash parts of Tamil Nadu, likely to continue till Jan 14

Heavy rainfall lashed parts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rains will continue to lash the state till January 14. "Very heavy rainfall has been reported at Atiramapattinam (13.5cm) of Tamil Nadu, Ariyalur (10 cm), Nagapattinam (8 cm) and Karaikal (6.3 cm) during 0830 hours IST of January 11 to 0530 hrs IST of January 12," the IMD tweeted.

UP schools to run in single shift from today

All schools for Classes 9, 10, 11, and 12 will run in a single shift from today in Uttar Pradesh, the state government has said. The Classes will be run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for all educational boards as per the notice. Schools across the country were shut due to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The schools and colleges in Uttar Pradesh were reopened on October 19 in two shifts, with several safety guidelines set into place by the state government and the health department. However, most schools recorded abysmally low attendance as many students preferred to stay away.

With 12,584 new COVID cases, India's tally jumps to 1.04 cr; death toll at 1,51,327

With 12,584 new coronavirus cases being reported in a span of 24 hours, the lowest in around six-and-half months, India's COVID-19 tally rose to 1.04 cr while the recoveries have surged to 1.01 cr according to the Union Health Ministry's data updated on Tuesday.

11 dead after consuming poisonous liquor in MP's Morena

At least 11 people have died and eight others have fallen seriously ill after consuming suspected spurious liquor in Madhya Pradesh's Morena district, police said on Tuesday. As per preliminary reports, some villagers consumed a white coloured liquor, Morena Superintendent of Police Anurag Sujania said.

11 UK returnees test positive for new coronavirus strain in Maharashtra

As many as 3,519 travellers from the UK have undergone RT-PCR tests in Maharashtra so far, and 76 of them tested positive for COVID-19, including 11 who were found infected with the new coronavirus variant, said a state health department official on Monday. He said the authorities have traced 536 close contacts of the travellers who tested positive and 358 of them have already undergone tests, of which 31 were found positive for COVID-19.
