Overnight rains in the national capital added to the miseries of farmers who have been camping on the borders of Delhi for over a month in protest against new farm laws, with the continuous downpour leading to waterlogging at agitation venues. Farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohar, who is a member of Sankyukt Kisan Morcha, said on Sunday that farmers have waterproof tents but they cannot protect them from biting cold and waterlogging.

ITC Grand Chola: Chennai's luxury hotel turns Covid hotspot; 85 test positive
About 85 people, including staff members, at ITC Grand Chola in Chennai have tested positive for COVID-19 since December 15 last year to 1 January. Out of the total of 609 samples collected till now, 85 people were found to be Covid-19 positive. Following this, the Greater Chennai Corporation has been instructed to carry out saturation testing of all the guests at the hotel, Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said.

Delhi on Sunday woke up to rains and thunderstorms as the western disturbance continues to impact northwest India for the second consecutive day. Loud thunders and heavy rains were witnessed across Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in the wee hours of Sunday, which also impacted the minimum temperature. Earlier on Saturday, parts of North India had witnessed light rain and snowfall as coldwave continued to sweep the region, with Keylong in Himachal Pradesh shivering at minus 7.3 degrees Celsius.

India records 18,177 new COVID cases, 217 deaths in 24 hours; active cases dip to 2.5 lakh
The number of fresh COVID-19 cases was recorded below 20,000 in India on Sunday, taking the country's caseload to 10,323,965, while the number of people who have recuperated from the disease crossed 99 lakh, according to the health ministry. A total of 19,079 people tested positive for the coronavirus infection in a day whereas 20,923 recoveries were registered during the same period.

Covid vaccine: DCGI big announcement on Oxford's Covishield and Bharat Biotech's Covaxin expected at 11 am
The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) will address a press conference today (January 3) at 11 am and it is being expected that the drug controller watchdog may announce the approval of emergency use of two vaccines. This comes after an expert panel of the drug regulator gave its recommendation on Saturday for the emergency use authorisation of Oxford AstraZeneca's Covishield and Bharat Biotech's Covaxin COVID-19 vaccines. On January 1, Covishield was recommended for emergency use while COVAXIN was recommended for restricted use on January 2. Now a final approval on the use of both the vaccines awaits DCGI nod.
