Bengal reports first case of new COVID strain as son of senior official tests positive

West Bengal on Wednesday reported its first case of a mutant coronavirus strain that surfaced in the United Kingdom, a senior health official said. The patient, son of a senior official of the state Health Department, tested positive for the Variant of Concern 202012/01 (VOC-202012/01) mutant coronavirus strain after returning from London 10 days ago, the official said.

Maharashtra govt extends Covid-19 lockdown restrictions till January 31

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Maharashtra government has extended lockdown restrictions in the state till 31st January 2021. Maharashtra is one of the five states and UTs that account for 60 per cent of total active COVID-19 cases in the country. The Maharashtra government had earlier imposed a night curfew in all the municipal areas of the state. The curfew is in place from 11 pm to 6 am and will remain in force till 5 January.

7 UK returnees test positive for new Covid strain in Karnataka

Seven people who returned to Karnataka from the UK, were found to be infected with the mutated strain of coronavirus, state Health Minister K Sudhakar said on Wednesday. The swab samples of 26 people who tested positive for COVID-19 were sent to NIMHANS to ascertain whether it is the new strain.  The 26 were among the 1,614 UK returnees, who were subjected to the tests. "Of the seven people, three are in Bengaluru and four in Shivamogga. All of them have been admitted to designated hospitals," Sudhakar told reporters. Forty six primary contacts of the seven people have been quarantined.
