Uttar Pradesh: Two dozen shops gutted as fire engulfs vegetable market in Firozabad

At least two dozen shops were gutted when a fire broke out in a vegetable market in Firozabad, police said on Thursday. The blaze broke out at about 1:25 am and immediately fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

SC stays execution of $1.2B damage order against ISRO's Antrix by US court

Varanasi man files plea seeking disqualification of jailed BSP MLA Mukhtar Ansari

A plea seeking disqualification of jailed Bahujan Samaj Party MLA Mukhtar Ansari has been filed by a Varanasi resident before the Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. The petitioner, Sudhir Singh, has sought Ansari's disqualification on the grounds of his being absent from the House proceedings without its permission since its constitution in 2017. He has cited the provisions of Article 190 (4) of the Constitution.

Air quality in Delhi, suburbs drops to 'severe' level; worst since November last year

The national capital and its suburbs were covered with a layer of thick haze Thursday morning, with raging farm fires and a fall in the wind speed and temperatures pushing air quality to the worst levels in around a year. As the skies hung heavy and acrid over the region, people complained of itchy throat and watery eyes. Experts said unfavourable meteorological conditions -- calm winds and low temperatures -- and smoke from farm fires in neighbouring states led to a dense layer of haze on Wednesday night as the air quality index entered the "severe" zone.

India records 50,209 new COVID-19 cases, 704 deaths in a day; caseload nears 84 lakh

India recorded as many as 50,209 coronavirus cases in a span of 24 hours, taking the country's COVID-19 tally above 83 lakh, while the total recoveries surged to 77 lakh, according to the Union Health Ministry's data updated on Thursday.
