Ballia firing: Charges under NSA, Gangster Act to be slapped on accused, say police

Charges under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) and the Gangster Act will be slapped on the accused in the killing of a man during a fracas at a meeting attended by administration and police officials in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district, police said on Saturday. The local BJP leader who shot dead the 46-year-old man on Thursday remained at large, along with five other accused.

As security personnel kept their weapons ready to fire, an army officer from 53 Rashtriya Rifles managed to contact the hiding terrorist and convinced him that he would not be armed if he surrendered.

Punjab: Shaurya Chakra awardee's family demands arrest of accused; refuses to perform last rites

The family members of Shaurya Chakra awardee Balwinder Singh Sandhu, who was shot dead by two unknown assailants in Punjab's Tarn Taran district, have refused to cremate the body unless the accused are arrested. The 62-year-old Sandhu who fought terrorism in Punjab was shot dead in the district on Friday, months after the government withdrew his security cover. The motorcycle-borne men pumped four bullets into him when he was at his office adjoining his home at Bhikhiwind.

NGT directs UP to keep vigil on brick kilns in wake of pollution in NCR

The National Green Tribunal has directed the Uttar Pradesh administration to keep a vigil against illegal operation of brick kilns to protect the air quality in the National Capital Region. A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice AK Goel noted that brick kiln industry contributed about 5 to 7 per cent of PM10 emissions in winter and summer, respectively, to ambient air of Delhi and NCR.
