Even though the central government and Delhi government are making efforts to curb the pollution level, the air quality continues to dip in the national capital for the last one week. Air Quality Index (AQI) is at 294 in ITO, 256 in RK Puram, 286 in Anand Vihar, all three in the 'poor' category, according to Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) data. AQI stands at 325 in DTU and 381 in Wazirpur, in the 'very poor' category. An AQI between 0-50 is marked good, 51-100 is satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201-300 is poor, 301-400 is very poor and 401-500 is considered severe.

Sabarimala temple reopens for devotees after over 6 months; COVID guidelines in place
The famed Lord Ayyappa temple in Kerala opened to devotees Saturday morning after remaining closed for over six months due to the coronavirus pandemic, with a few worshippers wearing masks and carrying COVID-19 negative certificate offering prayers. The temple, which opened for the monthly puja on Friday evening, will allow pilgrims to offer prayers till October 21.

India's recoveries move past 65 lakh; active COVID cases drop below 8L-mark for the first time in over a month
India's recoveries from the novel coronavirus moved past the 65 lakh-mark on Saturday. Active cases also dropped below the 8 lakh-mark for the first time in 1.5 months, the Health Ministry said today. At least 62,212 new infections were detected while 837 died in the last 24 hours. The total COVID-19 caseload stands at 74,32,681 including 7,95,087 active cases. Out of the total tally, 65,24,596 have cured/discharged/migrated. About 1,12,998 people have died so far, the ministry said.

Ballia firing: BJP leader's brother among two arrested; MLA defends main accused
Police on Friday arrested two people including the brother of a local BJP leader who allegedly shot dead a man when a fracas broke out at a meeting attended by administration and police officials in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district. Five others were detained but till Friday night the main accused was yet to be arrested. As opposition parties targeted the state's BJP government, local party MLA Surendra Singh defended him.

Odisha likely to receive heavy rains next week; authorities prepare for floods, landslides
A fresh low-pressure area, brewing over the Bay of Bengal, is likely to trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall in several parts of Odisha early next week, weather officials said on Friday. Following the forecast, the state government asked officials to plan and remain fully prepared to deal with the possibility of flooding, water-logging and landslides. The Meteorological Centre forecast that the low-pressure area is likely to form over the central Bay of Bengal around October 19 and become more marked during the subsequent 24 hours.
