India records single-day spike of 74,442 COVID-19 cases, 903 deaths; tally crosses 66-lakh mark

India on Monday recorded as many as 75,829 new coronavirus cases and 940 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to Union health ministry data. India's Covid-19 tally crossed 65 lakh-mark with Maharashtra recording the highest number of cases. The total cases of coronavirus infections stand at 65,49,374 while the death toll climbed to 1,01,782 the data updated at 8 am showed. Out of these 9,37,625 are active cases, 55,09,967 recovered, according to the health ministry.

Over 3,000 bank employees test COVID positive in Odisha

As many as 3,066 bank employees in Odisha have tested positive for COVID-19, while 14 of them have lost their lives as on September 30, according to an official on Sunday. In a letter, Arupananda Jena, State Level Bankers' Committee (SLBC) convenor informed that State Bank Of India has reported the highest 968 COVID-19 positive cases with one death when it comes to public sector banks.

India may have crossed COVID peak in September: Finance Ministry

India may have crossed the COVID-19 peak in September, TOI quoted the Finance Ministry as saying. The ministry, in its monthly economic outlook report for September, also cautioned that the disease was far from over and urged all stakeholders to push for economic recovery as positivity rate improves.

COVID-19: Mumbai deaths again highest, state's cases nearing 1.5 million

Maharashtra's Covid-19 cases neared the 1.5 million mark even as Mumbai fatalities bounced back to the top slot along with Satara, health officials said here on Sunday. The state witnessed 326 deaths on Sunday, down from the peak of 515 (September 15), and the death toll zoomed from 37,758 to 38,084 now.

India exceeds WHO advisory on per day COVID testing by almost 6 times

India has exceeded the 140 tests per day for per million population, as advised by the World Health Organization (WHO) for comprehensive surveillance, of COVID-19 by nearly six times, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Monday. "WHO in its Guidance Note on "Public Health Criteria to Adjust Public Health and Social Measures in the Context of COVID-19" has advised that a country needs 140 tests/day/million population for comprehensive surveillance of suspected cases," the MoHFW's tweet read.

UP: 15 lakh electricity department employees on day-long boycott of work today

Fifteen lakh electricity department employees including junior engineers, sub-divisional officers, executive engineers and superintending engineers will go on a day-long boycott of work on Monday to oppose the proposal of privatising power distribution company Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited. In case the central government does not take back its decision, the boycott would be extended for an indefinite period, they warned.
