Hathras gangrape: SIT meets victim's family; Rahul, Priyanka also headed to the city

The gangrape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit woman in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras has shook India, putting spotlight once again on the vulnerability of women in India. The case, involving brutal rape of the girl, has triggered protests through the country. More so, she was cremated in the dead of the night with family members alleging that they were forced by police to hurriedly conduct the last rites, sparking even more outrage. Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi will head to Hathras today to meet the victim's family.

Army jawan killed in Pak firing in J-K's Poonch

India records single-day spike of 86,820 COVID-19 cases, 1,181 deaths; tally crosses 63-lakh mark

India on Thursday recorded as many as 86,820 new coronavirus cases and 1,181 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to Union health ministry data. India's Covid-19 tally crossed 63 lakh-mark with Maharashtra recording the highest number of cases. The total cases of coronavirus infections stand at 63,12,584 while the death toll climbed to 98,678 the data updated at 8 am showed. Out of these 9,40,705 are active cases, 52,73,201 recovered, according to the health ministry.

NHRC issues notice to UP govt, state police chief over gangrape of Dalit woman in Hathras

The NHRC has issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government and the state's police chief in connection with the gang rape of a 19-year-old Dalit women in Hathras district, officials said on Wednesday. The woman, who was battling for her life after the assault, died at Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday.

Govt extends BPCL bid deadline to November 16

The government has for the fourth time extended the deadline for bidding for privatisation of India's second-biggest oil refiner Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) by one and a half months to November 16. While the Cabinet, in November last year, had approved the sale of the government's entire 52.98 per cent stake in BPCL, offers seeking expression of interest (EoI) or bids showing interest in buying its stake were invited only on March 7.
