Farmers outfits in Karnataka protest "anti-farmer" policies

Farmers in Karnataka staged demonstrations across the state on Friday as part of a 'bandh' call given by several outfits to protest the 'anti-farmer' policies of the central and state governments. A large number of ryots from various parts of the state flocked to the state capital to take part in the protests against the amendments to the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee Act and the Karnataka Land Reforms Act.

Opinion | COVID pandemic in Maharashtra is alarming

In my show ‘Aaj Ki Baat’ on Friday night, I showed a viral video of Om Prakash Shete, who used to be OSD to former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, describing the plight of Covid-19 victims in the state. At one point, Shete broke down saying “I feel very bad, cannot sleep at times. The common man is unable to save himself from COVID. We have served 17 lakh, people, till now, but still, people are dying. Every day 600 people die. I feel exhausted after replying to umpteen number of requests from people for assistance. Many people are dying. It is my request to the court to remove this technical error.”

Traffic flow disrupted as farmers reach Delhi's Chilla border

Normal traffic was thrown out of gear at the Chilla border in east Delhi on Friday as a group of farmers reached there on their tractor-trolleys in a bid to enter Delhi. They were however stopped by Delhi Police deployed at the spot.

One killed, 5 missing as landslide buries several homes in Meghalaya

One person was killed and five others were missing when their homes were buried in a landslide triggered by incessant rainfall in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district on Friday, officials said. The landslide took place at around 6 am in Mawnei locality of the district, they said. Body of Razia Ahmed, a woman cricketer who has played for Meghalaya in several national tournaments was retrieved from the debris, they said.

Congress backs Bharat Bandh, Rahul says new agriculture laws will 'enslave' farmers

Voicing support for the Bharat Bandh call given by farmer organisations to protest the farm bills, the Congress on Friday alleged that the new agriculture laws will "enslave" farmers and the MSP will be "snatched away" from them. Various farmer groups have called for a nationwide shutdown on Friday against the three bills, which were passed by both houses of Parliament during the Monsoon session and await presidential assent.
