India records single-day spike of 83,347 COVID-19 cases; tally crosses 56-lakh mark

India on Wednesday recorded as many as 92,605 new coronavirus cases and 1,133 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to Union health ministry data. India's Covid-19 tally crossed 54 lakh-mark with Maharashtra recording the highest number of cases. The total cases of coronavirus infections stand at 54,00,620 while the death toll climbed to 86,752 the data updated at 8 am showed. Out of these 43,03,044 cured/discharged/migrated, according to the health ministry.

Scolded at home, 11-year-old takes Rs 5K from mother's purse, cycles to Haridwar

An 11-year-old boy went on to put Delhi police on its toes when he set off for Haridwar on his bicycle just because his mother scolded him. His parents approached the police at South Rohini police station, and a case of kidnapping was registered on Friday night.

With highest recoveries per day, India's COVID-19 testing capacity surges to over 12 lakh tests daily

India's COVID-19 testing capacity has surged to more than 12 lakh daily tests, said Union Health Ministry on Wednesday. Taking to Twitter, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) said more than 6.5 cr total tests have been conducted across the country. Higher testing leads to early identification of positive cases.

Protesting against unruly behaviour towards him, RS Deputy Chairman Harivansh breaks his fast

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, who had been on a fast to protest the unruly behaviour towards him in the House by Opposition MPs, broke his fast early on Wednesday. The deputy chairman was accused of not paying heed to the Opposition’s demand for a division of votes on two contentious agricultural reform bills on September 20, and for overlooking the views of Upper House members sitting in the Lok Sabha chamber at the time.

Mumbai rains LIVE: Parts of city receive heavy downpour; streets waterlogged

Several areas in Mumbai received heavy rain starting late afternoon on Tuesday. Areas in south Mumbai, as well as western and northern suburbs like Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Malad and Borivali received around 70 mm rainfall since Tuesday morning, said an official from IMD Mumbai. India Meteorological Departmemt (IMD) predicted 'generally cloudy sky with heavy rain' for Mumbai.

Death toll in Bhiwandi building collapse rises to 33; search, rescue operations continue

The death toll in the Bhiwandi building collapse in Maharashtra rose to 33 on Wednesday, with the recovery of a dozen more bodies overnight, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said. The number of those rescued has gone up to 33, with five more persons being pulled alive out from the debris since Monday night, police said. The dead include 11 children, aged between two to 15 years, an official said. Those rescued are being treated at hospitals in Bhiwandi and Thane, he added.
