8 suspended Rajya Sabha MPs continue sit-in protest past midnight; mosquito repellents, ambulance on standby

The sit-in protest by eight suspended MPs at Parliament premises on Monday continued past midnight and received the support of a large number of opposition leaders. To show solidarity with their protesting colleagues, senior opposition leaders came in hordes including NC leader Faroukh Abdullah, JD(S)' Deve Gowda, Samajwadi Party's Jaya Bachchan, Congress’ Ahmed Patel and NCP's Praful Patel.

Maharashtra: Death toll in Bhiwandi building collapse rises to 17; nearly 20 rescued

The death toll due to three-storeyed building collapse in Maharashtra's Bhiwandi town on Monday has reached 17. At least 20 others including a four-year-old boy were rescued in the incident. The 43-year-old Jhilani building caved in at 3.40 am, police said, adding a two-year-old boy is among the dead. Two civic officials have been suspended in connection with the collapse and an offence has been registered against the building owner, an official said.

Light rains in eastern Uttar Pradesh; more likely on Tuesday

Very light to light rain and thundershowers occurred at isolated places over eastern Uttar Pradesh on Monday, while the weather remained dry over the western parts of the state, the meteorological department said. Day temperatures rose appreciably over Gorakhpur, Faizabad and Allahabad divisions, and there was no significant change in the remaining divisions of the state, it said.
